Baked Ziti!


I love cooking Italian foods but for some reason have never tried baked ziti before. So in a quest for a new Italian cooking lesson I decided to give this little ziti zapper a try. It’s done the easy way (yes, with jarred sauces), however, when time warrants I’d love to do it the old-fashioned way with home-made-slow-cooked sauce. I’ll update on the difference if I ever make it that way. The best thing about this recipe is you can mix and match to your liking!


1lb of ziti pasta (I used wheat pasta)

2 24oz jars of your favorite sauces. I used a pink vodka and a garlic & herb tomato mixture

1/2 onion, chopped

4-5 cloves of garlic, minced

1.5 lb ground beef (optional, I also added 2 large italian sausage links, sliced)

2 small zucchinis, sliced

6 oz sliced provolone cheese

8 oz shredded mozzarella cheese

fresh grated parmesan cheese

1.5 cup sour cream


1. Pre-heat oven to 350* and lightly butter baking dish or pan

2 .Boil pasta until al dente ~8 minutes

3. Brown meats in large skillet, add onions, zuchinni, and garlic. Add all sauces and simmer ~15 minutes

4. Layer pan: 1/2 ziti pasta, provolone cheese, all sour cream, 1/2 sauce mixture, remainder of ziti pasta, mozzarella cheese, remaining sauce, topped with parmesan cheese

5. Bake 30 minutes

This recipe turned out delish! Makes for great left-overs too.  For anyone who has a tomato-sauce aversion (I used to be that way!) try a white version with garlic alfredo sauce and spinach. Happy eating!
